2002 AMCC Champions

Season Summary

Frostburg State Alum, Brian Parker, returned to FSU to become head coach of the women’s soccer program in 2002.  Parker was a goalkeeper for the Bobcats from 1987-89 and coached the women’s team as a club sport from 1990-1993. Coach Lysik departs to Rhode Island to become an assistant for Division 1 Brown University. The Bobcats return 17 players from the record-setting 2001 squad, which posted a 17-5-1 record and won the programs first AMCC Title.  As a result, FSU was picked by the conference coaches as the pre-season favorite to win the AMCC title in 2002.   In spite of the solid returning group, FSU would also face the most signifcant schedule upgrade in school history facing seven regionally ranked opponents in a tough non-conference schedule, six on the road.   FSU finished the season with a 9-8-5 overall record accomplishing a lot in those 9 wins.  A highlight game of the regular season came when FSU shocked regionally ranked Carnegie Mellon defeating them 1-0 in Pittsburgh.
The Bobcats were able to successfully defend their AMCC title by winning away games in dramatic fashion in the AMCC Tournament - at Greensburg in overtime and at LaRoche in a penalty kick shootout. FSU's conference finish earned them a second straight bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament where they would lose a first round game at Westminster 4-1.
Karen Kotofski became the second FSU women’s soccer player in the program’s history to earn regional All-American honors when she was selected to the third team of the 2002 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Regional All-America Team. Kotofski also earned a second-team Verizon/CoSIDA All-Academic District II Team selection with a 3.615 GPA.
